A Sheffield driver has been fined £3,416 and banned from driving for six months after being caught offering taxi services without a valid license. Mohammed Sajjad Khan, of Bell House Road, was found operating illegally by the Licensing Team in March last year. Despite holding a private hire driver's license with Sheffield Council, his license was suspended at the time, and his vehicle had no insurance.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding taxi regulations in Sheffield, particularly as taxi licence fees have risen after eight years to address a financial deficit.
After failing to attend his court sentencing on February 20, Mr. Khan was sentenced in his absence for illegally plying for hire and driving without insurance. He received a fine of £2,000, was ordered to pay court costs of £440, and a victim surcharge of £976. Additionally, his license was endorsed with eight penalty points, leading to his six-month disqualification from driving.
Council’s Response to Illegal Taxi Services
Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, emphasized the importance of ensuring passenger safety and maintaining legal taxi operations in Sheffield:
"This is another great result for our Regulatory and Legal Services teams, who do fantastic work in taking action against those who offer services illegally or without the proper licenses."
She further stated that unlicensed taxi services pose safety risks as there is no guarantee that vehicles or drivers meet required standards. The council remains committed to taking strict action against those violating taxi licensing laws to ensure a safe transport environment for residents and visitors.
