Taxi marshals have returned to York to improve safety at two key city-center taxi ranks during busy weekend nights. The initiative, managed by York Business Improvement District (BID), aims to ensure public safety and order from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. This program, which has been running for eight years, is part of a broader effort to create a safer environment for both taxi users and drivers.
Carl Alsop, operations manager for the BID, explained the importance of the initiative:
"Ultimately, there might be a lot of drunk people there, but there also might be people who've just finished work or have gone to see a friend and just want to get home."
Since its launch, the program has led to a reduction in disturbances such as noise complaints, street fights, and public urination, making the area safer for everyone. This initiative reflects a growing focus on safety, as seen in similar programs across the UK, such as the recent suspension of taxi marshals in Darlington, which highlights the importance of proper conduct and accountability in these roles.
The scheme, funded by local businesses, residents, and the City of York Council's licensing team, is seen as a critical component of York's Purple Flag status. This award, given by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), recognizes efforts to maintain safe and vibrant night-time environments.
Councillor Kate Ravilious emphasized that the program also contributes to reducing violence against women and girls, adding extra security to the taxi trade.
