Uber’s CEO highlights safety, cost, and regulatory challenges as major barriers delaying widespread adoption of self-driving taxis in the UK.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has stated that fully autonomous rideshare services in the UK will not become mainstream anytime soon due to significant challenges. Speaking during Uber’s earnings call, he highlighted safety concerns, regulatory hurdles, and the high cost of self-driving technology as major obstacles to scaling driverless taxi fleets. Although Uber has partnered with Waymo to introduce autonomous rides in the US, Khosrowshahi stressed that achieving a similar rollout in the UK will take time due to stricter regulations and infrastructure limitations.
Regulatory and Safety Challenges in the UK
The UK government has been gradually developing policies for autonomous vehicles, but there are still uncertainties surrounding their legal framework. Unlike some US states that have permitted autonomous taxis, the UK’s regulatory process remains cautious, focusing on safety and accountability. Khosrowshahi emphasized that for self-driving cars to gain public acceptance, they must be significantly safer than human-driven vehicles. Parking, charging, and maintenance also present logistical issues that could slow down adoption.
Economic and Workforce Considerations
The cost of implementing self-driving fleets remains high, making widespread adoption economically unfeasible in the near future. Additionally, Uber continues to rely on human drivers to meet demand and handle vehicle upkeep. While automation is advancing, Khosrowshahi does not expect UK Uber drivers to be replaced within the next five years.
Dara Khosrowshahi stated:
"Making driverless cars common in rideshare will take a long time due to various challenges."
