Wolverhampton Council has approved a new CCTV policy for licensed vehicles, introducing stricter regulations to enhance safety for both drivers and passengers. The policy now permits ICO-compliant, switch-controlled audio recording, provided the switch is illuminated and accessible to all occupants. Similar initiatives, such as mandatory CCTV in Barnsley taxis boosting safety for all, highlight the increasing focus on security measures in the transport sector.

Passengers must not be visible in footage recorded by dashcams, ensuring their privacy. Additionally, audio recording through dashcams is strictly prohibited. Inward-facing dashcams are not considered authorized CCTV and are not allowed in licensed vehicles.

A council spokesperson stated:

"These changes are designed to improve security while maintaining privacy standards for all vehicle occupants."

”Safety Matters - Wolverhampton drivers and passengers are both now far better protected....”

The decision aligns with broader efforts to balance security with data protection laws, ensuring compliance with industry standards. The policy reflects growing concerns about safety in transport services while maintaining passenger rights and regulatory requirements.
